SimpSamp
A MIDI Triggered Simple Sample Player
Version 0.7
Copyright (c) H. Seib, 1994
What is SimpSamp?
=================
SimpSamp is a windows-based .WAV-file player.
The playback of up to 128 different samples can be triggered by incoming
MIDI Note On messages, or with the built-in simulated MIDI keyboard.
The minimum requirements for SimpSamp are:
- 80386 or better
- Windows 3.1
- a sound card capable of .WAV-file output
Installation
============
Installation is easy: just copy SIMPSAMP.EXE to the directory where you like it
best, then add it to a program manager group of your choice.
The first time it is run, it will ask you for the MIDI input/output devices
to use. Normally, you will want to use "SB MIDI In" and "Voyetra Super Sapi
FM Driver", or whatever the name may be for your sound card.
That's it! Enjoy!
Settings
========
The following settings can be changed:
- Samples / Define
this menu entry allows you to define up to 128 .WAV-file names.
Whenever the corresponding MIDI Note On message comes in, playback of the
sample is triggered.
- Settings / Keyboard / Configure :
Here, you can define the MIDI channel that SimpSamp listens to.
If the "Omni Mode" check box is checked, it listens to Note On messages on
all 16 channels.
If "Send to MIDI Output Device" is checked, all notes played on the simulated
MIDI keyboard are sent to th MIDI output port, too. This allows to use
SimpSamp as a keyboard for any MIDI device installed in your setup!
- Settings / MIDI / Devices
Here, you can define the used MIDI In/Out devices. If "Midi Thru Enabled" is
checked, all incoming MIDI messages are echoed to the MIDI Out device.
How to get the REAL Thing
=========================
This working demo version of the product can do almost anything the real
version does. The following features of the real package have been changed:
- saving preset banks
preset banks are always saved to SSDEMO.SNF in the demo version
- playback timing
As the real version preloads the samples, there are no perceptible delays
on playback start
These are no real limitations, though - you can always rename the file to
another name and load it in a later session.
To get the latest version of the real product, including a full manual, you
only need to register it.
When you register the program you will receive the latest version of SimpSamp,
including printed documentation.
The cost of registration for Version 1.0 is $24.95, plus $5 S&H.
To register, you can print and fill in the ORDER.FRM file if you wish.

Communicate!
============
SimpSamp is, at the moment, a very simple application. It can play back only
one sample at a time, and the timing is not exactly exact (;-]), so it can't
be considered a replacement for a real sampler. However, if enough interest
is generated, I might devote time to a better version that allows:
- polyphony (4 voices should be feasible in any case)
- pitch changes (changing the pitch of a .WAV)
- multiple setups (selectable by MIDI patch change msgs...)
- etc. etc., you name it...
So, if you like this program, or have comments, ideas, etc., drop me a note!
